Default Dinner and other comps due to rate of play

I was reading this article about what it means to be a casino hosts and the issue of comps came up.
Does it really depend on the rate of play? How heavy do you have to bet to get a comp?

That is a great question that I would like to know the answer to myself. I really don't know how the system works, but I would figure they have limits and guidelines. My grandparents always get free trips, hotel rooms, gambling money, dinners, and entertainment tickets in Las Vegas. I would suppose they would bet 10,000-20,000 each time they would go.
