A slot machine made its official debut in Pennsylvania on Monday, October 9th, as officials at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs unveiled the first machine delivered in the Commonwealth.
Robert Soper, chief executive officer of Downs Racing, displayed the "Powerball" slot machine based on the popular lottery game at a ceremony Monday and said as long as every approval is in place, Nov. 14 will be opening day at the new slots parlor. As long as Pocono Downs receives its final approvals, it will be the first slots parlor to open in the state. There will be room for 1,083 slot machines at the race track, Soper said. Construction also will begin on a slots parlor separate from the race track and grandstand in a former parking lot at the beginning of next year. The parlor will be equipped for as many as 2,000 slot machines. Pocono Downs is about 50 miles from Stroudsburg in Plains Township on Route 315, just north of Wilkes-Barre.
