i guess the question also means, are these things different?

are we just using different words to describe the same machine, or are the machines as themselves as different as say baseball and cricket, surfing and skateboarding, that kind of similar but not the same deal?

In Australia, they're referred to a "Pokies" or "Poker Machines," but their official name is "Gaming Machines."

In the UK, they're known as "Fruit Machines" or "AWP," which stands for Amusement with Prizes.

When they were mechanical we called the "One Armed Bandits" here in Australia. I think they had the same name in other countries as well.

I remember Fruit Machines when I was living in the UK as a kid. You could play them at the local Movie Theater. What a great way to get kids gambling.

I've played them in Ireland, where they are located in Amusement Parlors. Each parlor can have as few as a few dozen amusements, to as much as several hundred. They are located throughout the country, though mostly in seaside/beach resort towns (etc., Tramore, Bundoran, Bray, Kinsale (not a beach resort, but a yacht resort town)). They are co-located, in the same building, with video games that kids play--they are virtually right next to each other. The way the machines work is somewhat similar to the way they work in Harrah's Cherokee, North Carolina. You put a coin in and you get multiple spins for that single coin. They do have different types of machines there--but you can also find some that are the same as here.

In asian countries, I think they call them "golden lions" or something of that sort...why? because the machines just eat all your money. At least it was fun feeding the lions.
