As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "...Harness racers, electrical workers, fair organizers and others came to the State House on Wednesday to protest legislative proposals that would result in more money for the state and less money for their interests.
"Their concern stems from a proposal before the Appropriations Committee. Both Democrats and Republicans on the committee are looking to help plug a hole in the state budget by taking money from slot-machine revenue. "But critics said that diverting more money to the state means less money for harness racing purses and local agricultural fairs, and might even jeopardize the construction of the new Hollywood Slots site in Bangor. "...Democrats are proposing to reduce the share of wagers returned to players from 93 percent to 92 percent and to increase the tax on gross wagers from 1 percent to 2 percent. "Republicans are proposing nine changes, including limiting the growth of scholarships and limiting the amount of money diverted to off-track betting facilities and agricultural fairs..."
