Contact the Casino which issued the W-2G. In addition to issuing you the W-2G at the time of the win, they should have mailed you copies by Jan. 31, at least that is what happens here.

Default State tax in Louisiana?

If you are not a citizen of Louisiana do you have to pay state taxes on a slot win?

jbosch,

I found this on the Louisiana State tax site:

Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Individual Income Tax

Nonresident and part-year resident taxpayers who are required to file a federal individual income tax return are required to file a Louisiana income tax return, IT-540B reporting all income earned from Louisiana sources. The calculation for the IT-540B requires that a taxpayer report all income from all sources in order to determine a ratio of Louisiana adjusted gross income to Federal adjusted gross income. Only income earned from Louisiana sources, however, is taxed.

Gambling winnings earned in Louisiana is considered to be Louisiana sourced income. A nonresident who received gambling winnings from Louisiana sources and who is required to file a federal income tax return must file a Louisiana return reporting the Louisiana income earned. If the amount withheld is overpaid, a refund of the difference will be issued or credited to the tax liability for the following year, based upon the taxpayer’s return.

Here is the link also:http://www.revenue.louisiana.gov/sec...ome.aspx#nriit

Hope it helps.

When my DH got a hand pay (over $1199) they just withheld LA taxes, but not the federal. We had no choice on the state tax!

Default Tax withheld

I have some question about tax withheld. I won couple jackpots and I request 25% withheld. I don't want to burden my taxes and end up paying for it. The question is how does that effect my taxes withheld if I reported losses more than my winning? I heard that if my losses is greater than my winning I don't have to report it and don't know if that is true or not. But I have some withheld. I guess I have to report it to get some credit for it. Don't know if it wise to withheld or not. I would like some feed back on this if you don't mind. Thanks

I have always taken the full payment of all my W2s I have received, just because if you plan on seriously playing your more than likely going to lose more than those wins. Now if you are to big of a high roller and win a jackpot of around $10,000 and up, I would start to consider taking some out than. Not sure what happens if you have taken it out and casino and your losses are more than those wins?

Hi Lucky Bonus,

Since you were issued a W2-G, you should declare the winnings as income on your 1040. The deduction for gambling losses is placed on Schedule A-Itemized deductions. Your deduction for losses is limited to ONLY the amount you have won. So it cancels your tax liability for the declared winnings. The losses are the part that need to be substantiated, i.e., win-loss statements, ATM receipts, your records of when you gambled, etc.--just in case the IRS wants proof.

The withholding decision really depends on your individual situation/income. As Flushed has said, if you have a large win ,it may become more important to withhold.
For small wins, withholding may not make much difference in the overall picture.

jg 1873,

Sounds like your tax situation is unique. The person who completes your taxes should be able to answer your questions; they'll have all the specifics to consider in their preparation.
