A retired Austin man won nearly $1.5 million Saturday playing a quarter slot machine at Diamond Jo Casino in Northwood, Iowa.
Raymond Winkels Jr., a 62-year-old retiree from Quality Pork Processors, was at the casino for a promotional drawing in which he won $100. He saw the slot machine just as he was contemplating going home with his drawing money and decided to try his luck with $20 there. The slot machine jackpot was $1,491,191. Winkels says he goes to the casino about once a month, but his largest win until now was about $300 to $400. Did he celebrate after winning that much? Not really. The casino put him up at the hotel for the night, then he drove home. He called his brother and his brother-in-law. He plans to use his winnings to purchase a new car and visit his brother in Arizona.
